The Bahamas ?? known officially as the Commonwealth of The ?? Bahamas, is a country within the Lucayan Archipelago. The archipelagic state consists of more than 700 islands, cays, and islets in the Atlantic ? Ocean, and is located north of Cuba ?? and Hispaniola, northwest of the Turks and Caicos ?? Islands, southeast of the United States ?? state of Florida, and east of the Florida Keys. The capital is Nassau on the island of New Providence. The designation of “the Bahamas” ?? can refer either to the country or to the larger island chain that it shares with the Turks and Caicos ?island.

The climate of the Bahamas is tropical savannah climate or Aw according to Köppen climate classification. The low latitude, warm tropical Gulf Stream, and low elevation give the Bahamas a warm and winterless climate. The Bahamas have been free of snowfall, with the exception of snow mixed with rain reported in Freeport on the island of Grand Bahama on January 19, 1977.
Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, although hurricanes have been known to occur outside that period. During hurricane season, visitors are advised to monitor local weather reports closely in order to be prepared for any potential threats. Visitors should also be aware that airports and seaports cease operations well before a predicted storm actually arrives, and that seats on most commercial transportation are sold out far in advanced.
The official language of the Bahamas is English. Many people speak an English-based creole language called Bahamian dialect (known simply as “dialect”) or “Bahamianese.
The criminal threat level for New Providence Island (includes Nassau and Paradise Island) is rated as critical by the Department of State. Crime in Grand Bahama has increased this past year. Criminal activity on the outlying family islands does occur, but to a much lesser degree than on New Providence or Grand Bahama.
The Bahamas has one of the highest incidences of sexual assault in the Caribbean, according to the 2012 United Nations statistics on crime, violence, and development trends.

For visits NOT exceeding 30 days: An original Alien Registration Card is required, along with a national passport (passport from country of birth). For visits exceeding 30 days: A valid national passport and a Bahamas visa are required for US resident non-citizens wishing to stay longer than 30 days.
